For Employers and Employees
If you are an injured employee
Report the injury to your employer as soon as it happens, even if it seems minor, because the report is what opens the claim. Bring your employer name, the date and time of the injury, how it happened, and any claim number you have already been given. Without those details treatment can still go ahead, but billing and paperwork become much harder afterwards.
What happens at the visit
- The injury is assessed and treated
- The mechanism of injury is documented carefully, because the record matters later
- Work status is decided: full duty, restricted duty or off work
- Any restrictions are written clearly enough for a supervisor to apply them
- A follow up is arranged
Restricted duty is usually better than time off
Where it is safe, returning to modified work tends to produce a faster and more complete recovery than staying home. Restrictions should be specific, such as a weight limit or no overhead work, rather than vague.
If you are an employer
Tell us who should receive work status forms and how, keep the same contact for follow ups, and send the job description where you can. A provider who knows what the job actually involves can write restrictions that keep someone working safely instead of signing them off entirely.
Emergencies
Serious head injuries, eye injuries, chemical exposures, crush injuries, amputations, and any loss of consciousness need emergency services immediately. Call 911 first and complete the paperwork afterwards.
