Getting the Most From Preventive Care

Why prevention visits are different

A preventive visit is not about a problem you already have. It is a scheduled check on the things that tend to cause trouble quietly, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and weight, alongside the screenings that are recommended for your age and family history.

What gets reviewed

  • Your personal and family medical history, updated each year
  • Blood pressure, weight and other basic measurements
  • Which screenings you are due for, based on age, sex and risk
  • Immunizations you may have missed
  • Alcohol, tobacco, sleep, activity and mood, which affect risk more than most people expect

How to prepare

Bring a list of your medications and supplements, any results from tests done elsewhere, and what you know about your parents and siblings medical history. If fasting bloodwork is planned, our team will tell you beforehand how long to fast.

Cost and coverage

Many preventive services are covered differently from a visit for a problem, and some are covered at no cost to you. If a new problem comes up during a preventive visit, that part may be billed separately. Ask our front desk before your visit and we will tell you what to expect.

How often

Most adults benefit from a preventive visit once a year. If you live with a chronic condition, your provider may recommend seeing you more often.
