Keeping Your Medications Safe
Bring the bottles, not a list
The single most useful thing you can do is bring every container you take, including prescriptions from other providers, over the counter medicines, vitamins, herbal products and anything a relative gave you. Labels carry the dose, the prescriber and the date, and lists written from memory are very often wrong.
What gets reviewed
- Whether each medication still has a reason to be there
- Whether any two of them interact
- Whether the dose still suits your kidney function, liver function, age and weight
- Whether a cheaper or simpler option would work as well
- Which ones could be stopped
Side effects are worth reporting
Tiredness, dizziness, a new cough, swelling, stomach upset, low mood and poor sleep are all things a medication can cause. People often assume it is age or stress. Say it out loud, because a small change can fix it.
Refills without a gap
Ask for a refill when you have about a week left, not on the last day. If a medication needs a review before it can be refilled, that week is what allows an appointment to be arranged without you running out.
Never stop suddenly without asking
Some medications, including certain blood pressure, heart, seizure, steroid and mental health medications, are unsafe to stop abruptly. If you want to come off something, call us and we will plan it properly.
