Planning Your TB Test
The skin test takes two visits
The most common tuberculosis skin test needs two appointments. A small amount of fluid is placed under the skin of your forearm at the first visit, and you must return between 48 and 72 hours later so the result can be measured. If you miss that window the test does not count and has to be repeated from the beginning, so book both visits before you leave.
Plan around your deadline
If an employer, school or program has given you a date, count backwards. Allow at least four days for a single skin test, and longer if a two step test is required, which some healthcare and long term care employers ask for.
Between the two visits
- Do not cover the spot with a bandage
- Do not scratch or rub it
- You can wash and shower as normal
- Mild itching or a small bump is expected and does not mean the result is positive
Tell us beforehand if
You have had a positive TB test before, have had the BCG vaccine, have had a live vaccine in the past month, or are taking medication that suppresses your immune system. Any of these can change which test is appropriate for you.
