How Telemedicine Works

Before the appointment

• Find somewhere private, quiet and reasonably well lit, with the light in front of you rather than behind
• Test your camera and microphone a few minutes early
• Use wifi if you can, and plug in or charge your device
• Have your medications, any home readings and a pen and paper to hand
• Write your questions down beforehand, because video visits move quickly

During the visit

Your provider may ask you to move the camera closer to show a rash, a wound or a swollen joint, or to do something simple on camera such as taking a deep breath or moving a limb. Say if the connection drops or you cannot hear, straight away rather than guessing at what was said.

What can and cannot be done remotely

A great deal can be handled by video: many infections, rashes, medication reviews, follow ups, results discussions and mental health appointments. Anything needing a physical examination, a swab, bloodwork, imaging or an injection will need an in person visit, and your provider will say so and arrange it.

Prescriptions and follow up

If a prescription is needed, have your preferred pharmacy name and location ready. You should finish the call knowing what happens next, when you will hear about any results, and what would mean you need to be seen in person.

If it becomes an emergency

Do not use a video visit for chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe bleeding, weakness on one side or difficulty speaking. Call 911.
