How Psychiatric Medication Is Managed

Starting low and reviewing often

Most psychiatric medications are started at a low dose and increased gradually. That is deliberate: it reduces side effects and makes it clear which change caused which effect. Expect a review within the first few weeks rather than months later.

The first two weeks

Side effects often appear before the benefit does. Nausea, headache, restlessness, drowsiness or vivid dreams are common early and frequently settle. Knowing this in advance is the difference between pushing through a rough fortnight and abandoning a medication that would have worked.

What to tell us between reviews

  • Any new or worsening side effect
  • A change in sleep, appetite or energy
  • Any thought of harming yourself, immediately
  • Any other medication or supplement you start, including from another provider
  • If you are pregnant, planning to be, or breastfeeding

Do not stop suddenly

Stopping many psychiatric medications abruptly can cause withdrawal effects and can bring symptoms back quickly. If you want to come off something, or you have already missed several days, call us and it can be planned safely.

Crisis support

Call or text 988 for the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any time, or 911 if you are in immediate danger. Do not wait for your next appointment.
