Knowing Where to Go

Minor emergency or emergency room?

The difference is not how much it hurts, it is whether the problem could threaten life, limb or eyesight. Deep cuts that need stitches, suspected simple fractures, burns that are small and shallow, sprains, foreign objects in the eye or skin, and infected wounds are usually well suited to urgent care. Anything that could be a heart attack, stroke, major bleed, severe breathing difficulty or serious head injury belongs in an emergency room.

What to do before you arrive

  • For a cut, apply firm pressure with a clean cloth and keep it raised
  • For a burn, run cool water over it and do not apply ice, butter or ointment
  • For a suspected fracture, keep the limb still and supported
  • For a suspected sprain, rest it, raise it and apply a cold pack wrapped in cloth

What to bring

Photo identification, your insurance card, your medication list, and the date of your last tetanus shot if you know it. For a wound, that date decides whether a booster is needed.

After treatment

You will be told how to care for the injury at home, when stitches need removing if you have them, and exactly which signs mean you should come back: spreading redness, increasing pain, fever, numbness, or a wound that opens again.

Call 911 instead if

There is chest pain, difficulty breathing, bleeding that will not stop with pressure, loss of consciousness, weakness on one side of the body, or difficulty speaking.
