Getting Your Labs Done
Fasting, and when it matters
Some tests need you to fast and many do not. Fasting usually means nothing but water for eight to twelve hours beforehand. Do not guess: ask when the test is ordered, because arriving without having fasted when it was required means coming back another day.
Medications on the morning of a test
Unless you have been told otherwise, keep taking your regular medications. If you take insulin or another diabetes medication and have been asked to fast, ask specifically what to do that morning, because skipping food while taking the usual dose can be dangerous.
Making the draw easier
- Drink water beforehand unless you have been told not to, as it makes veins easier to find
- Wear a short sleeve or a sleeve that rolls up easily
- Tell the phlebotomist if you have fainted during a blood draw before, so you can lie down
- Say which arm has worked best in the past
How long results take
Common tests often come back within a day or two. Cultures and specialized tests can take a week or more because something has to grow before it can be read. Ask which category yours falls into so you know when to expect a call.
Understanding the numbers
A result slightly outside the reference range is common and is not automatically a problem. What matters is the pattern over time and how it fits with how you feel, which is why results are explained by your provider rather than sent without comment.
