Booking and Preparing
Book early in the season
Most schools and leagues set a deadline, and the weeks just before it are the busiest of the year. Booking three or four weeks ahead means that if something is picked up and needs a follow up or a specialist letter, there is still time before the first practice.
Bring the form, already started
Every school and league uses its own form. Bring the exact one your athlete needs, with the family history and medical history sections already completed. Those sections ask about fainting, chest pain during exercise, breathing problems, concussions and sudden death in the family, and they are the parts most likely to change the outcome of the exam.
What the exam covers
- Height, weight, blood pressure and pulse
- Vision
- Heart and lungs, including listening during and after activity where indicated
- Joints, flexibility and any previous injury
- A review of concussions, asthma and any medication used before exercise
What to wear
Shorts and a t shirt, so joints and movement can be checked properly. Bring glasses or contact lenses if used, and an inhaler if your athlete has one.
If something is found
Most findings do not stop anyone playing. Some need a follow up appointment or a specialist opinion first. Your provider will explain exactly what is needed and what the form can say in the meantime.
